For entry-level work in engineering, you typically need at least a bachelor's degree. You can obtain a degree in four years from the University of California-Los Angeles, which is noted for its nanotechnology program. Construction is also underway on a new engineering building at UCLA that will feature high-tech teaching laboratories and innovative facilities. Students can also pursue a bachelor's degree at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering. For graduate-level work, which is required for advanced engineering work, USC has several master's degrees including a special program for computer-aided engineering.
The Los Angeles area employs more than 70,000 engineers and engineering technicians, according to the state Employment Development Department. This number is expected to grow to 72,240 by 2012, according to projections. The fields of civil engineering, environmental engineering and electronics engineering will lead the growth.
