Los Angeles Film & Video Schools & Programs

The University of California at Los Angeles provides undergraduate and postgraduate education in production, film and editing. The University of Southern California offers undergraduate and masters degrees in film & production, critical studies, animation & digital arts and interactive media. For more advanced students, there is the prestigious American Film Institute, which has an affiliated conservatory that offers masters-level training in cinematography, producing, directing and editing.

Labor market statistics project that the producer and director sector will grow by 25% through to 2012. Cinematographers, camera operatives and video editors are projected to see an 18% increase, which is on par with the general job statistics for the region. Film industry worker flock to Los Angeles by the thousands, but all statistics seem to indicate that there is plenty more work available.

Few of those wishing to begin a career behind the camera fail to contemplate a move to Los Angeles. Scores of movie studios, independent film companies, television stations and many other smaller production companies make LA seem like the land of golden opportunity. In many ways it is, but in this instance, a little bit of research will go a long way. Thousands of people have tried to make their mark in the industry. Those that plan carefully will have a much easier time of it than those who turn up with a video camera and an old duffel bag.
