You can get your veterinary education started at the Los Angeles Pierce College Pre-Veterinary Program, the most successful two-year program of its kind in California. Vet tech programs are also offered at Mt. San Antonio College and California Polytechnic University. Biology degrees for pre-vet students can be pursued at California State University, the University of Southern California, Pepperdine University, Loyola Marymount University, and Occidental College.

California's Employment Development Department's long-term projections for animal health occupations in Los Angeles County from 2002 to 2012 predict 15.2% job growth for veterinarians, 13.4% job growth for veterinary assistants and laboratory animal caretakers, and 28.9% job growth for veterinary technologists and technicians.

Why Los Angeles is a Great Place to Study Veterinary

A multitude of employers and numerous vet-related educational programs, including one set on a 200-acre working farm right in Los Angeles, could make L.A. a great place for you to launch your veterinary studies and career. This metro area is home to two horse health science centers: Mt. San Antonio College Equine Center and the Equine Research Center at Cal Polytechnic in Ponoma. Also, the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is one of the most active national SPCA chapters. Its services include animal assisted therapy, dog behavior training, and animal rescue teams that provide emergency medical care in case of disaster or abuse.
